About us
A trusted local community group tackling digital exclusion in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and the surrounding area since 2014.
Our mission
We believe the internet is for everyone. Our aim is that no one in our community is left behind by technology. Through free, patient, one-to-one support, we help people gain the skills and confidence they need. We help people become:
Digitally Equal
With access to the devices and connectivity they need.
Digitally Able
With the skills and confidence to do what they want or need to do online.
Digitally Safe
Feeling able to keep themselves safe online.
Our story
Spire Computer Help was founded in 2014 by Linda and Brian Dove. They saw that many people in our community were missing out on essential services and opportunities simply because they lacked digital skills or confidence.
Over the years — interrupted only by Covid — we have grown from a small volunteer effort into a recognised force for digital inclusion.
- Since 2014Supported hundreds of local residents through thousands of one-to-one sessions.
- TodayA team of 15 dedicated Digital Champions with a wide range of experience.
- 2019Joint winners of the Stronger Communities Award (Mid Sussex District Council).
- 2023Presented with a Service Recognition Award (Central Sussex Rotary Service).
Our approach: Digital Champions
Our volunteers are Digital Champions — people who don't need to be tech experts, but who have patience, empathy and a real wish to help others. All our volunteers are DBS checked.
Person-centred
We focus on what you want to achieve.
Learner-led
You set the pace and the agenda.
Patient and friendly
We create a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
No jargon
We explain things in plain, everyday language.
One-to-one attention
Dedicated support for your particular needs.
Safe space
A welcoming place where everyone feels comfortable asking questions.
Our impact
Digital skills open doors. When people gain confidence online, the benefits ripple through every part of their lives.
£900
Research shows that people who make good use of the internet save around £900 more a year — and report being happier through better contact with family and friends.
Staying connected
Video calling grandchildren, getting back in touch with old friends, joining online groups.
Better health
Using NHS services, managing appointments, finding reliable health information.
Saving money
Comparing prices, finding online deals, keeping on top of finances.
Essential services
Using council services, paying bills, reporting problems.
Independence
Managing everyday tasks without having to rely on others.
Confidence
Feeling part of the digital world, rather than shut out of it.
The barriers we help with
People are left out of the digital world for many reasons. We help with the main ones:
- Limited or no digital skillsWe help from the absolute basics upwards.
- Low confidenceWe build self-assurance in a supportive setting.
- Lack of motivationWe show how the internet can help with your priorities.
- Safety worriesWe help you learn how to stay safe and avoid scams.
- No deviceWe can give guidance on affordable options.
How we're funded
(opens in a new tab)Our help is always free, and everyone on our team is a volunteer. A grant from Clarion Futures helps make all of this possible, and we're very grateful for their support.
The rest comes from donations from the people we help and our supporters, and each year donations cover a little more. They're never expected, but they really do help us keep going. Find out how you can support us.
Thanks too to the Burgess Hill & District Pantry (opens in a new tab), who kindly provide the pastries at the end of every Tech Talk.
